Where to Spray Carb Cleaner on an Outboard

If the performance of your vehicle is starting to decline, you notice that the drives are not as smooth as it used to be earlier, then there is a good possibility that it needs maintenance. There is a deposit of fuel varnish on the carburetors and the injectors that inhibit them from functioning properly. When these deposits add up it leads to inhibiting fuel flow in the engine. Some of the contents or ingredients used in the carburetor cleaner are Acetone, Xylene, Toluene, Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK), Ethyl benzene, 2-Butoxyethanol, and propane.

Instructions on Spraying the Carb Cleaner

You have to be very careful when you are spraying the carb cleaner. The contents of the carburetor cleaner are toxic and therefore can be hazardous for your health. Proper care and handling are required for spraying the cleaner. With the passage of time, the carburetors become clogged with varnish, dirt, and gum. The various carb cleaner products available in the market does the job of cleaning the carburetors effectively. However, there are some precautions that you must take. First and foremost you need to keep the carburetor cleaner away from electrical connections and the battery terminals. Spraying should be done in an upright position. You should also insert the plastic tube into the valve button.

When cleaning with the engine off, you must remove the air cleaner and clean carburetor from the outside as well as the entire linkage. Another area to spray is the exposed ends of the cool heat riser shaft. Allow it to penetrate well before cleaning. Also, you should be moving counterweight up-down until it is completely free.

When cleaning with the engine running spray on both ends of choke valve shaft while working the choke with hand. Spray around the throat of the carburetor to eliminate the deposits from throttle plate area. Make sure that you don’t spray below the throttle plate. There are some components that must be avoided while cleaning with the spray. These components include the D-ring, diaphragm on the accelerator pump as well as air cut-off valve. Spraying on these components can potentially cause damage to them.
